Halifax Skating Club Awards and Bursaries

To encourage the development of our future skaters, BMO Financial Group has established the CanSkate Champions Medal Program. This program honours the accomplishment and spirit of our young skating stars as they progress through the CanSkate program. These awards and additional awards presented by the club are outlined below.

Spirit of Skating Award

  •  Passionate about figure skating and through their enthusiasm,  motivates and encourages fellow skaters.
  • This skater is a positive role model to skaters of all ages and levels

Spirit of Skating Award

This is the only award that is voted on by the skaters for a skater. Team Spirit is the feeling of pride and loyalty that exists among the members of a team and that makes them want their team to do well or be the best. Skating is an individual sport yet having friends at the rink that cheer you on when you land your first axle or triple toe makes a difference. This is about that fellow skater that displays the following characteristics. 

  • Helpful - whether it’s a pair of runners or clear tape or something else you forgot will lend it to you gladly.
  • Supportive - gives you a pat on the back a big hug or says ‘nice try’ when your program doesn’t go as planned and claps loudest when your name is announced (and they’re in the same flight as you).
  • Inclusive - in the change room or on the ice or on social media makes an effort to include you.
  • Attitude - a sincerely nice person who says hi and smiles, and doesn’t play the mean person on social media.

Robyn Leet Scholarship Award

Robyn Leet was a CanSkater at he Saint Mary's Skating Club who was tragically killed in a car accident.  Robyn had just finished her CanSkate Levels and was starting her test level (now StarSkate) that fall.

  • Awarded to 2 CanSkaters who have completed the CanSkate program and are moving to the StarSkate Program.  
  • Recipients receive $100 in credits towards their session fees

Jack Poteri Award

Jack Poteri was a support of figure skating in the Halifax metro area since 1967, both as an arena manager and in his enthusiastic and helpful approach for Club skaters, parents, coaches and Board members.

  • The presentation of this award began in 1999 and recognizes excellence in volunteer work at the HSC.
  • Criteria for the award
    • A skater who exemplifies the "best club spirit" though their dealing with their club-mates, the public in general, and those to whom they may provide an example amongst their peers, especially the younger skaters (CanSkate or StarSkate skaters).
    • A "big sister" or "big brother" regarding the Club's younger skaters
    • An encouraging attitude to all
    • Good Sportsmanship
    • Supportive of other competitors and testing skaters
    • Helpfullness
    • Courtesy on and off the ice with all members of the skating family, including coaches, parents, official, arena staff and volunteers. 
    • Provides that '"gift of smile" to those they encounter
    • A true representative of the best of being a HSC skater.

Sandra MacEachern Award

  • Sandra MacEachern's favourite memories were performing on the ice. This award was created in 2016 in Sandra's memory.  
  • Awarded to the skater aged 12-15 who shares Sandra's love of performance. 
  • This trophy is engraved with the skaters name and is displayed at the Centennial Arena. 
  • A keeper plaque is presented to the skater at the annual banquet.

Skate Canada Nova Scotia Section Awards

Every year the Halifax Skating club nominates skaters and volunteers for the following Skate Canada Nova Scotia awards:

Skate Canada Section CanSkate Athlete Award

The purpose of the Skate Canada Section CanSkate Athlete Award is to recognize skaters who have shown enthusiasm and dedication to the CanSkate program throughout the skating season. Through their participation in the program, recipients of this award have demonstrated the talent and desire needed to find continued success on and off the ice.

This award will be presented in each of the 13 Sections at their respective section AGMs/awards banquets.

Skate Canada reserves the right to invite the section winner from the host section to the Skate Canada Ice Summit to accept the award on behalf of the 13 section winners.

Criteria:

  • Each skater must be enrolled in the CanSkate program as of January 1 of the current registration year
  • The skater:
    • Demonstrates a positive attitude
    • Demonstrates an eagerness to learn and improve skills
    • Is involved in other sports
    • Is cooperative
    • Participates fully

Skate Canada Section STARSkate Athlete Award

The purpose of the Skate Canada Section STARSkate Athlete Award is to recognize skaters who have demonstrated determination and commitment to the STARSkate program. Recipients of this award have displayed passion for the sport and have achieved success throughout the season, not only within the STARSkate testing system but also with personal skill development and growth.

This award will be presented in each of the 13 sections at their respective section AGMs/awards banquets. Skate Canada reserves the right to invite the section winner from the host section to the Skate Canada Ice Summit to accept the award on behalf of the 13 section winners.

Criteria:

  • The winner of this award should reflect the essence of the STARSkate program, including:
    • Participation
    • Achievement
    • Personal success
    • Displaying spirit and passion for the sport
    • Striving for new goals
    • Achieving balance within skating and in other areas of life
    • Giving back to the sport by assisting at club level (program assistant, volunteering for club events, etc.)
  • Must not have registered or competed in a CompetitiveSkate (Pre-Novice or higher) category at a Sectional qualifying competition.

Skate Canada Section CompetitiveSkate Athlete Award

This award will be presented in each of the 13 sections at their respective section AGMs/awards banquets. Skate Canada reserves the right to invite the section winner from the host section to the Skate Canada Ice Summit to accept the award on behalf of the 13 section winners.

Criteria:

  • An individual skater who is under the age of 16 as of July 1 of the current competitive season OR a pairs or ice dance team under the age of 18 as of July 1 of the current competitive season
  • An individual, pairs, or ice dance team who exhibits spirit, dedication, determination or other favorable qualities
  • A minimum pre-novice competitor with a top-10 finish at the Sectional level in the current competitive season
  • A positive role model for other athletes
  • An individual, pairs or ice dance team who combines off-ice and on-ice training in order to meet his/her competitive goals

Sections will select the winners.

Skate Canada Section Officials Award

This award encompasses technical representatives, evaluators, judges, referees, technical controllers, technical specialists and data specialists. It will be presented in each of the 13 sections at their respective section AGMs/awards banquets.

Criteria:

  • A Skate Canada technical representative, evaluator, judge, referee, technical controller, technical specialist or data specialist who is currently registered with Skate Canada
  • Active at the Section level or lower for at least five years
  • Demonstrates a knowledge of Skate Canada rules, policies, philosophies and programs
  • Is keen to share accurate information with other officials, athletes, coaches, parents and administrators with the interest/intent of developing figure skating and figure skaters in Canada
  • An individual who has given quality service to the Section and the organization in general

Sections will select the winners.

Skate Canada Section Program Assistant Award

The purpose of the Skate Canada Section Program Assistant Award is to recognize dedicated and passionate program assistants who continuously share Skate Canada’s vision with all participants of the program. This award is presented to individuals who are not only great assets to the coaching team on the ice, but also show their commitment off the ice by providing support and assistance to the club and its registrants.

This award will be presented in each of the 13 sections at their respective section AGMs/awards banquets.

Criteria:

  • A currently active program assistant who:
    • Has made a significant contribution to his/her club by having assisted skaters, coaches and/or the club executive with programming both on and off the ice
    • Is an excellent role model who inspires others to embrace the joy of skating
    • Displays a potential for a long-term commitment to the sport of figure skating in the community in a coaching or volunteer role

Sections will select the winners.

Skate Canada Section Volunteer Award

It will be presented in each of the 13 Sections at their respective Section AGMs/awards banquets.

Criteria:

  • Active and currently registered adult volunteer whose club and/or region efforts have produced specific, positive results in his/her section
  • An individual whose contributions reflect passion for the sport and its participants
  • An individual who is an exemplary role model for other volunteers, skaters and/or coaches
  • Has a minimum of five years volunteer work in the sport of skating
  • Shows an awareness and interest in the future direction of the sport Sections will select the winners.

Skate Canada Section Volunteer Award of Excellence

This award will be presented at the Skate Canada Ice Summit to one individual from each of the 13 Sections.

Criteria:

  • Active and currently registered adult volunteer whose efforts have produced specific, positive results in his/her section
  • An individual whose contributions reflect passion for the sport and its participants
  • An individual who is an exemplary role model for other volunteers, skaters and/or coaches
  • Has a minimum of ten years volunteer work in the sport of skating
  • Shows an awareness and interest in the future direction of the sport

Sections will select the winners.

Deadline for nomination : February 15

Skate Canada Section Volunteer Coach Award

This award will be presented in each of the 13 sections at their respective section AGMs/awards banquets. It will be given to a professional coach who has contributed to the coaching community through volunteer efforts at the club, region, section or national level. The focus of this award is on volunteer contributions made by professional coaches to the sport of skating.

Criteria:

  • An active professional coach who is currently registered with Skate Canada with a minimum NCCP status of CanSkate Coach Certified or Primary STARSkate Coach Certified
  • An individual who contributes volunteer time in addition to professional coaching time at the club, region, section or national level • A professional coach who inspires others to embrace the joy of skating
  • A professional coach who has demonstrated commitment to the development of the sport of skating

Each section will use its own selection process and will select one winner for that section.

Elizabeth Swan Memorial Award

The purpose of this award is to recognize an individual for his/her dedication and contribution to the discipline of synchronized skating in Canada.

This award will be presented to one individual at the Skate Canada Achievement Awards Gala. Nominations should be submitted by event technical representatives, domestic or international event referees, national team coaches, national or international team managers, section synchronized skating coordinators, or any member of the Skate Canada and/or Section Board of Directors. Skate Canada reserves the right to not present this award in any given year.

Criteria:

  • Active adult volunteer (including officials, event organizers, administrators and representatives, etc.) recognized for his/her contribution to synchronized skating
  • Reflect the characteristics of Elizabeth Swan - dedication, perseverance, commitment, passion and spirit
  • A strong desire and interest in promoting the sport of synchronized skating within and beyond the skating community
  • An individual who is aware of, and supports, the development of all levels of synchronized skating
  • An individual who has given at least 10 years to the discipline of synchronized skating in a volunteer capacity

The winner will be selected by the Skate Canada President, Chair of the Program Development committee and members of the Skating Development department.

Club Coach Award of Excellence

The purpose of the Skate Canada Club Coach Award of Excellence is to recognize dedication and success in coaching at the grassroots level. The recipient will be selected based on his/her outstanding contributions to our sport within the skating community and to the well-being of athletes participating in Skate Canada programming, specifically in the Learn to Skate, Learn to Train and Active for Life, Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) stages.

Nomination Guidelines and Eligibility:

Nominees must meet the minimum criteria defined below for the current registration year, must be currently registered professional coaches in good standing and must consent to the nomination.

Criteria:

  • Must have attained a minimum NCCP status of Club Coach Certified.
  • Must be dedicated to the profession and have a proven track record of coaching excellence and success within one or more of the following program areas:
    • Learn to Skate LTAD stage: CanSkate or CanPowerSkate
    • Learn to Train/Active for Life LTAD stage: STAR program, non-qualifying SynchroSkate
    • Active for Life LTAD stage: Adult Skate, Adult SynchroSkate, Collegiate Skate or Special Needs
  • Must move beyond coaching as a profession and contribute to the development of skating through professional and/or volunteer commitment (e.g., serve on a skating-related committee at any level, act as an NCCP learning facilitator or as an official, etc.).
  • Must embrace change, encourage an Active for Life philosophy and inspire all to embrace the joy of skating.

The winner will be selected by a panel that consists of the Skate Canada President, the Chair of the Coaching Development Committee, the Senior Coaching and Officials Manager, and the Coach Development Coordinator.

This award will be presented to one individual at the Skate Canada Achievement Awards Gala. Skate Canada reserves the right to not present this award in any given year.

Competitive Coach/Choreographer Award of Excellence

The purpose of the Skate Canada Competitive Coach/Choreographer Award of Excellence is to recognize the dedication and achievements of the coach/choreographer in this category. The recipient will be selected based on his/her outstanding contributions to our sport and the well-being of athletes participating in competitive figure skating. This award is presented to a registered professional coach in good standing who has made a significant contribution to a team or athlete’s performance.

Nomination Guidelines and Eligibility:

Nominees must meet the minimum criteria defined below, must be a current registered professional coach in good standing and must consent to the nomination.

Criteria:

The nomination must clearly recognize the criteria for the award in the current competitive season.

  • A coach/choreographer with a minimum NCCP status of Provincial Coach Certified.
  • A dedicated coach/choreographer with a proven track record of career excellence and success at one or more of the following skating events during the competitive season in which the award is presented:
    • has coached one or more skaters at Skate Canada Challenge, Canadian Tire National Skating Championships or Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships
    • has coached one or more skaters at ISU international events
    • has coached one or more skaters at ISU World Championships (junior and/or senior)
    • has coached one or more skaters at the Winter Olympic Games
  • A coach/choreographer who has demonstrated excellence in helping his/her athlete(s) achieve a personal best performance or notable competitive result.
  • A coach/choreographer who is keen to share accurate information with officials, athletes, other coaches and choreographers, parents and administrators with the interest/intent of developing figure skating and figure skaters in Canada.
  • A coach/choreographer who embraces change, encourages an Active for Life philosophy, and inspires all to embrace the joy of skating.

The winner will be selected by a panel which consists of the Skate Canada President, Chair of the Coaching Development Committee, and Senior Coaching and Officials Manager.

This award will be presented to one individual at the Skate Canada Achievement Awards Gala.

Skate Canada reserves the right to not present an award in any given year.

Officials Award of Excellence

This award will be presented to one individual at the Skate Canada Achievement Awards Gala. Active officials (technical representatives, judges, referees, technical controllers, technical specialists and data specialists) are eligible. Nominations should be made by event technical representatives, chief data specialists, domestic or international event referees, National Team coaches, national or international team managers or any member of the Skate Canada Board of Directors and/or Section Board of Directors. Skate Canada reserves the right to not present this award in any given year.

Criteria:

  • An active official who is currently registered with Skate Canada
  • Officiated at a minimum of one national* (or international) event in the current season
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Skate Canada programs philosophies, vision and mission
  • An official who is keen to share accurate information with other officials, athletes, coaches, parents and administrators with the interest/intent of developing skating and figure skaters in Canada
  • An individual who has given, and will continue to provide, quality service at the section, national and/or international level.

National events include

  • Skate Canada Challenge
  • Canadian Tire National Skating Championships
  • Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships
  • Regional Synchronized Skating Championships.

The Skate Canada President, Chair of the Officials Assignment and Promotion Committee, Staff lead of the Officials Assignment and Promotion Committee, and the High Performance Director will select the winner.

Event Volunteer Award of Excellence

The purpose of the Skate Canada Event Volunteer Award of Excellence is to recognize the dedication and achievements of the volunteer in this category. The recipient will be selected for his/her unique advancement and outstanding contributions to our sport in the successful execution of an international or domestic event hosted by Skate Canada during the past year.

Nomination Guidelines and Eligibility:

Nominees must meet the minimum criteria defined below and must consent to their nomination.

Criteria:

  • Must have volunteered at at least one international or national* event hosted by Skate Canada in the current event season
  • Must have gone above and beyond the assigned volunteer role at the event, making a positive difference
  • Must be keen to mentor and is an exemplary role model for other volunteers
  • Must show an awareness and interest in the future direction of the sport
  • Must inspire others to embrace the joy of skating

National events include

  • Skate Canada Challenge
  • Canadian Tire National Skating Championships
  • Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships.

Nominations may be submitted by the Local Organizing Committee Chair and Volunteer Recruitment Director of an event, as well as the Skate Canada Organizing Committee event execution staff.

The winner will be selected by a panel which consists of the Skate Canada President, Event Director, Event Manager and Event Volunteer Program Coordinator.

This award will be presented to one individual at the Skate Canada Achievement Awards Gala. Skate Canada reserves the right to not present this award in any given year.
